On March 16, 2016 NMSU’s Board of Regents passed a resolution that allows NMSU to reduce tuition for Mexican students to 1.5 times the resident rate. The special arrangement has been dubbed the “Descubre Program”, which is consistent with NMSU’s popular “All About Discovery” theme (Descubre translates as Discovery in Spanish).
Mexico is typically one of the top three countries sending international students to NMSU, with approximately 175-200 studying at both the graduate and undergraduate level annually. Despite NMSU’s long history of being a popular destination for students from Mexico, the Descubre Program is designed to attract still more Mexican students to the university. The Descubre Program’s tuition rate (available here) will be effective in the Fall 2016 semester.
To qualify for the special Descubre Program tuition rate students must:
- Be a Mexican citizen.
- Be on an F or J visa sponsored by NMSU’s Office of International Student and Scholar Services.*
- Be admitted to NMSU for academic study.
- Both new and continuing students qualify.
Accompanying this reduced tuition will be enhanced recruiting efforts in Mexico, especially in the bordering states of Chihuahua and Sonora. The program is also complemented by recent initiatives to collaborate with the Tecnológico Nacional de México, CONACYT, CONCYTECH, and other institutions supporting higher education in the country of Mexico.
